Rhinoplasty for Balance and Beauty

If you aren’t happy with your nose or if you have suffered an injury that has changed its look, rhinoplasty is the answer. Nose surgery or a “nose job” can reshape, reduce, or enhance your nose so that it is symmetrical and in proper proportion with your other features. Rhinoplasty can correct a hump or crooked nose, a long nose, a wide nose, or large nostrils, and it can change the angle between the mouth and nose. Dr. Small has advanced 3D photography in the office to allow you to see and discuss the look you desire and get a better understanding of what the result will look like with simulations! Dr. Small has performed countless rhinoplasty procedures on patients of varying ages and can correct breathing problems as well, such as a deviated septum or turbinate reduction.

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a gold-standard nose reshaping surgery to restore a balanced, attractive profile and enhance harmony among the features. It can correct a wide range of aesthetic issues, including a bulbous or drooping tip, an overly prominent bridge, or flared nostrils. Additionally, rhinoplasty can correct functional concerns inside the nose that impair proper breathing.

Who Makes a Good Candidate?

Patients who are unhappy with the size, shape, or function of their nose make excellent candidates for rhinoplasty, provided that they are healthy, non-smoking, and realistic in their expectations. Some patients with minor imperfections such as asymmetry, bumps, or depressions in the nose may benefit from a liquid rhinoplasty performed with dermal fillers.

However, the majority of patients require surgical adjustments to the bone and cartilage within the nose in order to produce a successful transformation. Dr. Small will conduct a detailed, in-depth consultation process to make sure that nose surgery will be a safe, effective solution for accomplishing your cosmetic goals.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

You will be under general anesthesia during your nose reshaping surgery. The majority of nose surgeries last approximately two hours. There are two basic approaches to nose surgery. In a closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are made inside the nose with dissolvable sutures. In an open rhinoplasty, the incision is on the outside between the nostrils, but the scar is on the underside of the nose, where it is not noticeable. The technique used will depend on what is required to accomplish the look you want.

If your nostrils are too large or if any other area needs to be built up, Dr. Small might use a technique called cartilage grafting. The cartilage is removed from the inside of the nose or sometimes from the ear.

Recovering from Nose Surgery

Recovering from rhinoplasty takes 7-14 days in most cases. You will feel a bit sore and have some swelling, numbness, and bruising after your surgery. You may also experience stuffiness and slight bleeding.

Your nose will be bandaged, and you might need to wear a splint for a short time to help your nose hold its new shape while it heals. Packing of the nose isn’t usually necessary. Dr. Small will keep a close watch on your progress and give you full instructions for your recovery period.

You will also need to sleep on your back for a couple of weeks, and you will have to avoid wearing eyeglasses for a short time. You can wear contact lenses, however. You will look better pretty quickly, but a rhinoplasty can take a full year to “settle” into its final result.

Can I Combine a Rhinoplasty With Other Procedures?

Many people get chin augmentation to complement a rhinoplasty. These procedures help to create facial harmony and are popular with both men and women. For men, creating a stronger or shorter nose, along with a stronger jawline, is often the objective. Women sometimes wish to have a more petite nose and less pointy chin.

Is Rhinoplasty Painful?

While rhinoplasty produces dramatic cosmetic results, pain is kept to a minimum during and after the surgery. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, so you are asleep the whole time and will not feel anything. After surgery, pain is well-controlled with prescription and over-the-counter medications.

How Long Until I See Results?

Within a few weeks, patients can usually notice positive changes in their profile. However, residual swelling can persist for quite some time, so it’s important not to judge your results too quickly. The final shape of the nose may take up to one year to emerge.

What Will the Scarring Look Like?

Closed rhinoplasty is considered a “scarless” technique since all incisions are made inside the nose. Open rhinoplasty requires a small incision at the base of the nose but it is typically so faint after healing that no one would notice it except for you and the doctor.

When Can I Exercise Again After My Rhinoplasty?

Patients typically need to wait around 4-6 weeks before resuming strenuous exercise and heavy lifting. However, you can start taking gentle walks right away after surgery, as this helps to minimize certain risks, boost your circulation, and elevate your mood.

What Are the Risks Associated With a Rhinoplasty?

Risks with rhinoplasty include swelling, bruising, bleeding, discomfort, infection, congestion, asymmetry, poor reactions to anesthesia, poor scarring, and the need for a revision. Dr. Small will go over the risks and benefits of nose surgery in greater depth during your private consultation.

How Do I Find the Best Rhinoplasty Plastic Surgeon in Ocean County?

When choosing your plastic surgeon, it is critical to review their board certifications, credentials, training background, awards, specialized techniques, testimonials, and results. Additionally, you will need to vet your surgeon in person to see if working together is a good fit. Dr. Small understands how daunting it can be to embark on a surgical journey.
